In July 2021, Morton Hall IRC closed and was returned to the Ministry of Justice to re-open as a foreign-national-only prison in mid-2022.

Home Office has since then opened a Residential Short Term Holding Facility(RSTHF) on the site of, but entirely separate from, Morton Hall Prison, known as Swinderby RSTHF.
