Beyond Detention
Set up in 2001, Beyond Detention visits and supports people detained at Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre (YWIRC) in Bedfordshire and now also supports people when they leave Yarl’s Wood and are given the right to remain in the UK
The organisation has 3 Coordinators: 1 In-Detention Coordinator, 1 Post-Detention-Coordinator and 1 Activities Coordinator, and circa 60 volunteers who are made up of these roles: In-Detention Befriender (Visitor) Drop-In Volunteer, Casework Volunteer and Post-Detention Befriender.
Between the staff and volunteer team they visit, and or telephone the people they support on a weekly basis, providing much needed emotional and befriending support and ongoing practical support such as clothing, mobile top up and devices.
Beyond Detention currently provide 1 weekly Drop-In Session every Tuesday afternoon and will be expanding their Drop-In service this year to include a Thursday morning.
For more information about volunteering with Beyond Detention or, if you are in detention, about receiving the support of a visitor, please contact the organisation directly.
