AVID's Big Give Christmas Challenge campaign launches!

AVID is taking part in the Big Give's annual Christmas Challenge!

Our campaign, launching today (November 30th) will run for 7 days. The #righttorights campaign will help us raise essential funds for our work in ensuring volunteer access to places of detention.

The Big Give Christmas Challenge is a huge opportunity for AVID to raise vital funds to support our work. The Big Give provides match funding for every donation made, meaning that every penny raised will have double the impact! We are also delighted to be championed by the Human Rights Fund.

Our campaign centres on the importance of visitor access to places of detention, something which AVID has tirelessly advocated for, over the last 25 years. Detention in the UK is indefinite, isolating and damaging to mental health. We advocate or access for volunteers in detention to visit people who are facing detention alone. Without visitors, we would know very little about what goes on inside these facilities. Visitors are advocates for people inside, and they are also informal human rights monitors. All funds raised will help with our three campaign aims:

  • Advocating for access: funds will help ensures that AVID can continue our work to ensure that the rights of our members to independently access places of detention are protected. This includes collecting evidence to inform the Government and statutory bodies on access levels and if access is denied.
  • Awareness raising: funds will ensure AVID can share evidence of conditions in detention through our detention monitoring newsletters and blog. Also, to use social media to educate members of the public about the hostile environment and influence detention reform.
  • In depth detention monitoring: help us run regular sessions to bring volunteers in detention together to discuss what is really happening behind closed doors in detention. We will then use this evidence to advocate for better policies, conditions and a reduction in the use of detention overall.

As a friend, supporter or follower of AVID we would be so grateful if you could help us by making a donation, and by forwarding this link to your networks!
