Training: Managing suicidal conversations

About the training

This is a new training offered to AVID members, delivered by the Samaritans, on 'Managing suicidal conversations'.

It is a tragedy that we still meet so many people in detention who are extremely vulnerable, and even may express suicidal ideation. This is one of the hardest areas of our work to deal with and specialised training is essential.

This course will provide visitors with the skills to build rapport with a vulnerable person that they are visiting. It will equip visitors with the skills and confidence to handle challenging emotional conversations in a sensitive and professional way. It will also be a great opportunity for volunteers to share their own experiences of supporting vulnerable people and to discuss how we can work together to better support each other in these contexts.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Show that you have listened, heard and understood.
  • Understand and acknowledge suicidal thoughts and feelings.
  • Understand how talking about suicidal thoughts and feelings can be beneficial.
  • Recognise signs of distress and suicidal thoughts.
  • Approach someone who is feeling suicidal.
  • Support or refer someone who is feeling suicidal.

All visitors from our member groups are invited to attend. Places are strictly limited and booking is required.
