Awareness Raising Event: Belfast, 9th Dec

Larne House Visitors Group and Scottish Detainee Visitors: awareness raising event, 9th December, Belfast

The coasts of Northern Ireland and Scotland are only about 12 miles apart, so it is not surprising that the two countries have had a close relationship over the years: a shared history, geographical proximity and cultural ties have ensured an enduring commonality between the people of Scotland and Northern Ireland. It is no surprise then that two AVID members are working together to highlight the hidden issues of immigration detention in Northern Ireland and Scotland, to show how individuals can help and support people in detention, not just locally but also across the UK.

This event was organised as part of the Human Rights Festival in Northern Ireland to mark World Human Rights Day. Each year the 10th December is celebrated as Human Rights Day across the world. The date marks the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. Civil society groups across the world use this date as an opportunity to celebrate and mark the importance of human rights globally.

This event will explore current issues faced by people in detention both while they are in detention and also on their release. Shirely Gillan, Volunteer Coordinator with Scottish Detainee Visitors will showcase their short film ’Detention without walls‘ , a powerful film which includes original testimony on life after detention and the lasting impact of detention on daily life. The event will raise awareness locally of immigration detention and outline the importance of visiting with the Larne House Visitors Group to support those who are most vulnerable.

All are welcome and this is a free event!
