Social Media Volunteers Needed!

Do you have what it takes? Deadline Friday 12th June

We are looking for two or three self motivated and enthusiastic volunteers who are interested in furthering our online goals of raising awareness of the realities of immigration detention and challenging its ongoing use in the UK.

We are seeking to increase our social media presence. We already have a lively twitter account, and have recently set up a companion facebook page. We are seeking social media volunteers who can help us by:

  • Ensuring our Twitter account and Facebook page produces regular, accurate and relevant information about immigration detention, our activities and those of our network of members
  • Writing small piece of detention related news for our website
  • Occasionally updating our website as required
  • Researching, collating and communicating immigration detention related news

We are looking for people who have:

  • Previous experience of working or volunteering in a charity/NGO  environment
  • Experience of using the internet to find information
  • Solid experience of using Twitter (you will ideally have used Twitter frequently for a few months)
  • Strong communications skills, including the abilty to condense complex information into digestable formats
  • Some experience in writing for the web
  • Some design skills would be an advantage
  • General understanding of immigration detention, migrants rights, human rights or a related field
  • Ability to work independently and to manage deadlines
  • Enthusiasm and motivation to tackle this complex area and to help us bring it to new audiences

Volunteers will work remotely, with regular support from our staff team. You will therefore need internet access and a computer, and be comfortable communicating with us by phone zoom and slack. You will need to be a self starter and reliable.

We are especially interested in hearing from people with lived experience or who may have some experience of supporting people in detention.

Volunteers are asked to provide about a day a week, over a minimum of six months. We will provide you with the appropriate support and training. This is an unpaid role, but any expenses incurred will be reimbursed.

Volunteering will give you the chance to learn more about immigration detention. You will also have the chance to learn about how small charities like ours operate, and to find out about the communities and groups we support across the UK.

How to apply

If you are interested in volunteering for us, please provide:

  • CV detailing your experience
  • A short covering letter addressing the above skills areas, and confirming your availability
  • Your own twitter handle
  • A short written piece (one paragraph) on immigration detention. You can choose any area you wish to focus on.

Send the above to by the 12th June.
